Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

On this day, we pause to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a visionary leader who dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice, equality, and peace. Dr. King would have been 97 years old this year, and as we reflect on his journey, we recognize that the path to this recognition was a decades-long effort that began just days after his assassination in 1968.

This year carries special significance as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the holiday’s first observance. In honoring this milestone, we are reminded of Dr. King’s profound words:

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny."

As we reflect on his message of nonviolence and his dream of a more inclusive world, we are reminded that "the time is always right to do what is right." In observance of his spirit of service, we encourage our community to view this time not just as a day of rest, but as a "day on" for community reflection, advocacy, and action.
