But beyond being a list of rules to follow, what do these commandments actually teach us about our relationship with God and with each other?<\/p>\n<h3>What&#8217;s the Purpose?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>&#8220;The law is not just a set of rules, but a way of life.&#8221;<\/strong> &#8211; Rabbi Abraham Heschel<\/p>\n<p>In Exodus 20:1-17, we find the Ten Commandments given to Moses by God. But what was their purpose? Were they simply a list of don&#8217;ts and do&#8217;s to follow, or was there something more profound at play?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Ten Commandments were a way for God to establish a covenant with His people.<\/li>\n<li>They provided a framework for living in right relationship with God and others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What Do They Teach Us?<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The commandments are not just rules, but a revelation of the heart.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> &#8211; St. Augustine<\/p>\n<p>As we dive deeper into each commandment, we discover that they&#8217;re not just a list of dos and don&#8217;ts, but rather a reflection of God&#8217;s character and our own hearts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The first four commandments deal with our relationship with God: worshipping Him alone, taking His name in vain, and honoring the Sabbath.<\/li>\n<li>The next six commandments focus on our relationships with others: honoring our parents, not killing, not committing adultery, not stealing, bearing false witness, and not coveting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>More Than Just Rules<\/h3>\n<p>The Ten Commandments are often seen as a list of rules to follow, but they&#8217;re really so much more than that.
