The Power of Fasting: Cultivating Self-Denial for Spiritual Growth

  • What is fasting? In its most basic sense, fasting involves abstaining from food and drink for a period of time. But for the spiritual seeker, fasting can be so much more.
  • Fasting is a powerful tool for cultivating self-denial, discipline, and humility. When we deny our physical bodies the sustenance they crave, we create space for introspection, contemplation, and connection with the divine.

“Fasting is not just about going without food; it’s about creating space within yourself to listen to your soul.” – Dr. Daniel Amen

As Jesus Christ taught in his Sermon on the Mount, “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, that you can no longer make yourselves look sad by fasting, because your Father, whom you cannot see, is pleased with those who don’t get noticed.” (Matthew 6:16-18)

  • Benefits of Fasting: By abstaining from food and drink, we can:
    • Clear our minds and focus on spiritual growth
    • Strengthen our physical bodies and increase our sense of well-being
    • Develop greater empathy and compassion for others, as we relate to those who struggle with hunger and thirst

For centuries, Christians have used fasting as a means of spiritual preparation and growth. The apostle Paul wrote that he fasted three times before preaching the gospel (2 Corinthians 11:27). Jesus himself fasted for 40 days in the wilderness, emerging stronger and more spiritually attuned.

“Fasting is a powerful tool to break down barriers between ourselves and God… It’s an act of surrender, an acknowledgment that we need God more than we need our next meal.” – Christine Caine

  • Getting Started with Fasting: Don’t be intimidated! Start small:
    • Try a one-day fast to begin with
    • Use water or herbal teas for sustenance during your fasting period
    • Prioritize prayer, meditation, and Scripture study during your fast

As you embark on this spiritual journey, remember that fasting is not just about the physical act of abstaining from food. It’s about cultivating self-denial, discipline, and humility – and allowing those qualities to shape your relationship with God.
